Survey on the Medication by Nurses

The study was conducted to survey the nurses´ opinions on the medication and its related activities in hospitals. The questionnaires were sent to 600 nurses in five general hospitals located in Daegu area and the respondents were 432. Most of the respondents were participated in medication and they had many difficulties to communicate with patients about the drugs because of their insufficient drug knowledge. They learned their drug knowledge mainly through package insert of manufacturing company and partly from pharmacy. It was found that they hoped to have a regular on the job training on the drug. Surprisingly, nurses do not think pharmacists as their companions in the drug related services because they do not fully trust pharmacists as well as well as lack of close cooperation with pharmacists. These results indicate that it is important to understand the role of nurses in medication and to establish teamwork programs between pharmacists and nurses, in order to perform appropriate drug related services successfully.
